Made this lexicon because I believe the pronoun field bsky added to be greatly lacking. Plus the loss of the pronoun labeler last week deprived a lot of people of that feature and my first thought was it could just be built in rather than added on
Thanks for sharing here!
I like the idea of a protocol-wide lexicon to get pronouns, but a client/server having to get another record for each user, but it only be for pronouns, seems like too big of a thing.
A standalone pronouns lexicon that matches the feature set of https://pronouns.cc/ might be good, as well as a single protocol-wide profile lexicon.
I mostly created it because I didn’t want the record of my pronouns stored somewhere else rather than my repo. I didn’t mind it for a while, but when that popular pronoun labeler went down, I realized that all that time, someone else held the key to what pronouns I had available or displayed. I could’ve made a pronouns dot page account, but it just felt like shifting from one to another. I could put in my account bio, but that consumes space and I thought it’d be neat if it could just be displayed with name & handle
And in the absence of a pronoun field (to my knowledge at the time), I went looking to solve my issue. That brought me to making this lexicon and i thought to share it with others. Especially since others might also benefit from it
I didn’t really consider alternatives, or even self hosting something I could them link to; surprised me no one made something like this before (least from what I could find)
I hope that others can use it too. ![]()
Where can I find this? I seem to have missed the news, and I still don’t see such a field in my profile.
Your work also seems relevant for Universal profiles on the open social web — I.e. the aforementioned “single protocol-wide profile lexicon”.
It’s in the source code as a lexicon, but it hasn’t been released / isn’t displayed or editable.
There are a number of apps that let you edit the bsky pronoun field and display it outside of the bsky app.
This is great and very clear and totally makes sense.
