For the past few months I’ve been building VidSky, an ATProto-powered video sharing platform. Have had my bluesky account since Dec 2023, just recently exploring atproto.
What started as an excuse to learn React and TypeScript slowly turned into a project I’m genuinely proud of. Before this, most of my experience was running self-hosted services and MediaWiki communities, so building a full web application at this scale has been a completely different challenge. While I’ve seen discussions for videos on the protocol like: vod and media pds.
The platform is still invite-only while I continue refining things and work toward publishing records to users’ PDSes. Right now video files are stored through Bunny Stream while I explore what decentralized video storage might look like in the future.
I’ve been a long-time viewer of the large video-sharing site that shall not be named, and part of the motivation was simply curiosity about what a video platform built around user-owned identity and open protocols could look like.
I’d love to hear thoughts from others building media applications on ATProto, especially around publishing records, video federation, moderation, and storage. <3
