Atmosphere brand

Yes, we need an Atmosphere brand / logo!

This came up again recently

As we’ve written here and there, there is some work underfoot to create a global Atmosphere Community Co-Op.

Stewarding the trademark around assets like this could be one of the roles that the co-op helps fill.

@quillmatiq.com has gathered a community group to gather resources around atmosphere accounts.

@divy.zone kicking off thinking around Atmospheric Login is going to need some of this work sooner rather than later

Roughly, here’s what I see needed:

  • gathering a small group to figure out the process
  • identify a team to work on developing an atmospheric login
  • raise funds
  • run process including community involvement

Brookie made a good point: I don’t think “atproto” needs a brand. Protocols usually aren’t strongly branded.

Things like WiFi or Bluetooth are like coordinated marks, which are like IEEE802.11b as their protocol specification.

And the active atproto operator ecosystem that wants to coordinate on interoperable accounts & logins is more like the latter.

This is an interesting Unicode symbol (which is not the same thing as a brand or logo)

Thoughts about https://atmosphereaccount.com/, more specifically the Atmosphere account icon at Developer resources — Atmosphere Account Docs?

I talked to @joebasser.com recently and he said he’s open to making it a community project but it isn’t yet - hoping he and @quillmatiq.com can connect and figure out how to evolve it.

But it’s totally fine if Joe wants to just work on it by himself!

I haven’t seen any momentum around that icon.

I’ve seen another unicode symbol mentioned a few times as well: :cyclone:

Here is a reference:

Somewhat similar idea, the logo used for the ATmosphere plugin for WordPress was also mentioned:

I probably should not have started this by pointing to the Unicode one!

Ideally this is the work that needs to be done - why are “we” the community doing this work, what are the goals, who will work on it, how do we decide.

Definitely time to set this in motion! I think Bluesky can contribute resources to assist.

Hello everyone! I think we need to get this going quickly. The earlier we have a recognizable atmosphere logo/mark and standard login look for the web the better. I don’t think it needs to be something that takes a long time. What are we blocked on?

I agree that it’s time to start seriously having this conversation and put resources forward to develop the brand for the protocol. I feel that something spherical that plays off of the atmoSPHERE would be great. I developed something that I had in mind on Adobe Illustrator a while back, was wanting to go for a design that looks like an atmospheric cyclone/storm as a contrast to the more angular logo of the Fediverse.

hey @sherif.eurosky.social - I think what I quoted above is the “blocker” - a 2-3 leads, a process, gather a few more folks to participate, run the process with community involvement.

I don’t know what you have in mind for contest, but that is typically pretty frowned upon way of doing things and also ends up with Boaty McBoatface.

I do think that as something is developed, a showcase of assets, different treatments, and ways to include the logo on websites, logins, stickers, shirts etc etc etc is a way to do “let’s look at lots of nicely designed things” that includes everyone, rather than a contest.

Do you want to lead this effort? Can you think of 1-2 others to join you in this?

yup all makes sense. Happy to be a co-lead. Asking a couple of people. Any volunteers?

Hey everyone - @evelyn.northsky.team and I are volunteering to work on this - we’ll reach out to folks and update as things progress. In the meantime let’s keep the conversation going here.
