I’d like to share you rpg.actor which is a fun little project we’ve been working on for a minute that allows users to hold various D&D / TTRPG character sheets, along with a pixelart sprite in your own records, already compatible with multiple game systems.
What this allows is a fairly interoperable system for users to login to different games with their handles, have their persistent character sprite and stats, as well as a .master record from the game providers (or tabletop GMs!) to validate characters for their campaigns.
As lifelong fans of RPG Maker we’ve published a free sprite generator on the site that’s completely compatible with the engine, as well as a plugin suite and sample project that lets you login via OAuth (game-to-browser) pull / print relevant records, populate NPCs from the public compendium, and begin building out fresh experiences.
To launch the experience we’re hosting a GAME JAM from April 1 - 20 for all engines!
We’re giving away a rare boxed copy of RM2k as first prize, along with creator accounts to the top five submissions, which let folks create characters and hand them off to others!
Here’s an example of that for one of y’all to claim:
There’s a lot more going on than I can reasonably explain without writing too much, so will leave if here for you to explore. We’ll continue updating, but there you have it for now!
Very curious for your questions, interest, and hope to find you at The NPC Ranch!
Small Update:
We’ve opened up a Roomy Space for anyone interested in the project / jam.
Figure it’s the right place to begin pooling the rpg.actor community, and a great place for folks to gather and chat about their projects, find other team members (rather than Discord).
Since we announced the rpg.actor/jam we’ve seen over 100 characters register in some form through the Character Compendium and folks are hard at work making experiences for everyone to play. By month’s end we should have some very interesting games and novelties that we’ll all be able to enjoy.
There have also been some substantial updates to the .sprite system that allows for greater utility for those that are leveraging the Free Sprite Generator including a companion .generator lexicon that lets individual layers be swapped / recomposed in-game without sacrificing the universal compatibility of the original .sprite records, or player’s liberty to use completely custom (non-generator) assets.
Lastly, we’ve produced a new equipment.rpg.item and equipment.rpg.give that together allow players to build inventories with verifiable sourcing. We’ve updated the Dev Guide to detail these for now, and will be showcasing some fundamental example soon.
There’s a lot going on, so here’s a blog:
If you care to, follow along and share @rpg.actor as this thing keeps developing!
Someone in the rpg.actor/jam has published the first ATproto add-on for Godot Engine!
We’re still only halfway through the game jam deadline, so anyone interested in building something can definitely get a start with these new tools or the others already published at rpg.actor/plugins and I’m happy to help however I can if anyone wants to try!
We’re currently working on a few more novelties that will roll out as the jam continues, then featuring all final entries once things wrap on April 20th. After that… who knows!?
Looking forward to playing everything this community creates!
