During his presentation, Robin made the point. “Let’s say we take over the infrastructure, which is the plan.” “We still have the governance issue left, right?”
At top of his very long list is Identity. Now, most of the social (media) ones are issued by Big American companies. Most of the public (media) ones are issued by National Governments.
There’s a difference. Online (social media issued) identities offer freedom of expression, while digital (national government issued) identities demand accountability.
So, we need to understand how to combine the best of both and govern the networks and services they offer access to, particularly if we are “taking back the infrastructure”, and don’t really trust our governments.
That depends on what kind of sovereignty we are talking about.
Hey @simonfj.bsky.social this is kind of an event planning thread that’s pretty old now, and clearly @sebastian.eurosky.social doesn’t monitor this heavily.
You might want to tag him on Bluesky and share a link to this thread.
Many thanks Boris,
I see you’re doing quite a bit of Community Management around here. Thank you so much.
I really appreciate the help as your technical world is new to me. Its the Digital Sovereignty banner I’m going to start pushing (under which AT protocol falls (from a EC funder’s perspective). I’ve kept away from the “social” media world since MS bought LI.
I see we now have a record of the kick off here. (or I’ve just discovered it), so I guess that’s to be the events’ library for Eurosky. I’ll do as you advise and contact Seb. But before that, could we have a thread off this one (somehow?) where we could talk through each session/presentation.
I could use a discussion place to point a few groups from:
- the GEANT community (GEANT provide the backbone for each European country’s National Research and Education Network) and,
- the EC. (This page points to one of their Interoperable groups’ pages, which contains a graphic, and which I’d like to compare to Robin’s diagrams and comment: 1. “If we use the wrong mental model, we make the wrong decisions”.
The basis of any (fundable) potential project will focus on the convergence of old (public) broadcast, and new (public) interactive, media. Catherine and Robert explain the drivers.
- There is one other group whose mental model needs to be changed, and could be with Catherine’s, Robert’s and their peers’, help. (N.B. Their objective Number 4)
After only 15 years we have a banner to help the bureaucrats focus. And i know there are a few people in this community who could scope a project (for EC funding).
Please tell me to shut up if I’m being disruptive.
