Local atproto communities

Are the geographically localized atproto communities listed somewhere? If not, we can do that here.

We’ve begun testing a Roomy instance for our new Norwegian space: https://roomy.space/atproto.no

Happy to set this up for others as well. I’ll do a bsky shoutout to all of the above once we’ve had a few more days to steady this early-access release.

@tessa.germnetwork.co needs to name an SF Bay Area one.

I do think these would make good lexicon records at some point.

Thanks for kicking this off @erlend.sh

@tynanpurdy.com was suggesting naming ATProto enthusiasts too but I think that might be a different context. Dietrich Ayala told me about how he helped bootstrap distributed Mozilla devrel that we may want to take inspiration from.

I’ve got atproto.camp and I’m 100% down to making it available to communities and individuals that want to run events.

I think the local TLDs are pretty fun. Could use that as a central events and announcements page, collate every node account’s smokesignals, skeets, and leaflets.

oo tell me more ab this?

A lot (most?) of them are also legitimate verifiers of lived locality. Can’t get an .no domain without Norwegian citizenship. Can’t even get a .berlin without some proof of residence (so @tgoerke.bsky.social tells me).

The FAQ says it’s actually a bit flexible.

Only Berliners can register? As a general rule, at least one of the three contacts that must be specified when registering a .berlin address (i.e., the owner, the administrative contact, and the technical contact) must have an address in Berlin. This could be you, as a Berlin resident, or your registrar, or even a trustee, provided they are based in Berlin. However, there is no active control during the registration process for your .berlin domain.

Are .berlin addresses exclusively for Berliners or not?Basically, our former mayor Klaus Wowereit once said: “Berlin is a cosmopolitan and tolerant city.” He said that. The man is right.Anyone who wants a .berlin address can have one. John F. Kennedy, for example, was American, and we would have given him one immediately. The internet is simply not made for borders; on the contrary, it connects the world. A .berlin address certainly makes the most sense for Berliners, but the same applies to everyone else: anyone who follows the rules (see above) can have one

I don’t think there’s a TLD for the Portland, OR area but I’d be interested in setting up a group for this area! If there is a centralized domain I could use for anyone that doesn’t have a TLD that’d be nice

@chadtmiller.com and Devin from Graze are local to Portland and might be up for collab.

We could use @ngerakines.me’s atproto.camp for any regions without a TLD.

IMHO, this model is better anyway.
Common TLD is a unifying signifier.
That builds trust far more than nationalized TLDs.

Standardizing all such groups under .camp would also offer you uniform equity in presence. It also extends to potentially non-city/state specialty region groups (tribes, etc), should the need arise, with better preserved equality to nationalist modes.

It also sounds more fun.

Edit: I include city or alike in national modes.

It also offers a point of security.
atproto.camp can verify such camps are actually at location.

Anyone could purchase and manipulate atproto.co.uk right now.

If there’s a need for a berliner, I could be it

@portland.atproto.camp sounds great! I agree, using the same domain has a lot of advantages.

I’ve been involved in something called Boise Code Camp for several years now and code camps used to be pretty common. Camp makes for some very fun event vibes!

For .br domains, you need to be a Brazilian citizen or have a Brazilian company to provide an official document (just the numbers and contact info for legal purposes, no need to send the full ID).

Afaik, I could buy any TLD for specific brazilian cities or regions with no big deal too

But first, I need to establish local meetups/communities through atproto.com.br
