Montreal community gathering & Private Data sessions

Members of the Bluesky team will be in Montreal for IETF124. This could be a good opportunity to have some dedicated discussions around Private Data, as well as organize a community hack day / evening social (like NYC).

This would take place some time during week of November 1st - 7th. Maybe we’d aim for Friday Nov 7th for small group discussions, and Sat Nov 8th for a community hack day. TBD.

Private Data Discussions

These would be small group discussions around design, use cases, and requirements of Private Data. We’d invite builders who are actively working on applications that need private data or would like to implement it to join.

We’d find a time during the week, probably find a coworking space or similar, for a smaller group to come together.

The outcome would be an additional understanding of use cases, requirements, and active commitments to codebases and proof-of-concepts.

If there’s interest in other deep dives (maybe coordination on infra for AI moderation & scanning? lexicon embeds? other? – leave a comment!) we could make space for that, or cover it as part of the Community Hack Day.

Note: Private Data and this community gathering isn’t an “IETF Discussion”. The bsky team is taking the first steps of the pre-process to see if ATProto would be a fit. Private Data and the Private Data Working Group is very much a community initiative to see if there is interest in coordinating on getting something out with a joint effort.

Community Hack Day

This would be a one day hack day / ad hoc discussions with evening presentations and social, similar to the NYC event.

We need a space that can fit 40 - 60 people (estimated! could be much smaller depending on interest) with tables/chairs/power outlets, a project / presentation space.

If you have connects in Montreal, or suggestions on who to reach out to, please share!

Funding / Organizing

We know that in-person events have hard costs of travel and accommodation, never mind the opportunity cost of time off.

Some of the discussions we’re going to need to have is funding for engineering work across organizations that want to interop on implementations. For example, Rudy from Blacksky has indicated that he has an engineer from his team that could attend, if travel support is available.

Longer term: a need for engineering funding ongoing for implementations (let’s assume rsky as one org), plus additional 1-2 other engineers from separate orgs that may also want to put time into building an implementation (on PDS codebases, appviews, or other components as appropriate), as well as participating in interop discussions and specification improvements.

@bmann.ca can put some time into this to help organize if there is interest in making this happen, and we should put this on the agenda for a private data working group kick off meeting. If you’d like to help plan / sponsor / get involved, leave a comment!

There is a placeholder RSVP on Smoke Signal:

Follow along with this thread, and leave a comment on what you’d like to see / how you want to be involved / whether this is a good idea or not.

Hello! I’d like to attend and would need travel support.

I’m all about it and will self fund.

Any thoughts on hotel group rates or at least coordinating around the same area?

Are we going to IETF or just hanging out in Monteal at the same time? (it sounds like no to the IETF, want to make sure I’m clear in my understanding)

Yeah looking for shared Airbnbs or group rates would be one of the planning tasks to do.

Re: IETF - the hackathon day is free for all to attend and I think it would be good to go for that.

The bsky team is in town for IETF and we should coordinate on who can attend what.

This sounds great, @wesleyfinck.org and I would both be interested in joining! We can self fund, and I will also check if we can use the grant to provide sponsorship. One easy way for us could be to sponsor a group AirBNB.

Thanks Ronen that’s a great offer.

I think we should do the research on venues and accomodation along side of getting early commitments / interest of who will come.

Including topics of discussion! I’ve proposed private data but would like to hear from others on topics of interest.
