I’m gonna bring this back in here since this is no longer about the pledge but rather has everything to do with your original query of ‘how to sell an atmospheric app?’
@holobrine.bsky.social made a great point
In other words, start by making something so useful that people won’t want to stop using your thing. From there the revenue play is just a matter of talking to your users, which you clearly have an aptitude for as evidenced by these sense-seeking threads ![]()
Sifa for scientists
Personally I think the most exciting thing you’re cooking up right now is LinkedIn for Scientists.
That could be the perfect vertical slice for Sifa to specialize in as a wedge into the wider professional networking market. Facebook didn’t start by being for everyone, they started out as a social network for students (and creepy non-consensual tinder before that) and then went broader after they got a solid foothold in that one segment.
I don’t know the market well, but afaik LinkedIn is the dominant networking platform for scientists only because it has captured most of the entire professionals market, but they do a terrible job of catering to scientists.
- Scientists love Bluesky and the atmosphere, and the atmosphere loves them back.
- They made the move from Twitter to Bluesky; they can be convinced to make the move from LinkedIn to Sifa
- Scientists aren’t rich, but they generally have money that they’re willing to pay for Good Stuff.
If you made scientists your top priority for 3-6 months and essentially marketed Sifa as ‘LinkedIn for scientists (and other such real people doing real things)’ you should be able to amass enough users who don’t just like but need Sifa, and from there the revenue play is just a few community consultations away.
