Survey questions and other post conf ideas

Here are a few of the conference wrap up tasks.

  • cleaning up VODs: lots of people built VOD players but the source videos still need some work in cutting dead air, matching up events, and so on — this ideally will all be reflected on the website
  • shipping t-shirts: we need a final tally and do stuff packing bags with leftover stickers
  • email to all attendees: we’ll point to various resources, ask for feedback, and include a link to a feedback survey
  • finalizing all bills and payments and producing some financial summaries

If you have suggestions on questions to include in the survey, please do leave a comment.

We can also run further surveys in the future.

2027

There are no set plans or organizing crew for 2027. Sharing details from the 2026 wrap up will be helpful input.

There seems to be a strong demand to have a global conference again, and as I’ve written elsewhere and done in the past for other communities, rotating continents is one way to do it.

Personally, I have an interest in forming a co-op entity to be responsible for a variety of things.

That doesn’t block early research. We can look to put together a Grist database where we gather venue availability and pricing for a 500-750 person conference in late March.

AtmosphereConf Website, News & Blog

The AtmosphereConf website was a lovely example of community contributions. We could move the 2025 conference there as an archive, plus the AHOY videos.

A shared community calendar for ATProto and adjacent events could be a good feature.

Please file issues (or PRs!) with other ideas you have GitHub - ATProtocol-Community/atmosphereconf: AtmosphereConf website · GitHub

The news.atmosphereconf.org site remaining as conference news is probably a good idea.

The atprotocol.dev blog has over 400 subscribers in ghost. Many of those are Tech Talks - which could also move to the AtmosphereConf website?

Moving the ghost blog to something else and perhaps sharing community-wide announcements is a thing we can look at.

Regional Events

A lot of regions are likely to be kicking off soon, this would be a great way to keep momentum.

Tynan gathered folks at the Conf. Nick put up a listing at atproto.camp.

As mentioned above, a shared calendar could be a thing.

Other than running events for a couple of months, what else do regional events need?

I started writing more, about upcoming events and new and revived working groups.

There is a lot that can be done.

A couple things re: local/regional events:

  1. We’re working on a PDS for the local/regional groups. We also have a Signal. If you wanna join, reach out to @tynanpurdy.com or any of us!
  2. @ngerakines.me put the atproto.camp site up on tangled so we could have an easier way to manage it.
  3. In Los Angeles, the number one thing we need is affordable space or sponsors. Personally, I think these events work best as part demo/discussion/education and part social. It worked really well for us on the 23rd in LA. To do the first part, you need wifi, space for computers, and usually a TV or projector of some sort. LA does not provide its space freely or cheaply, so we have to address that tension. @chrisshank.com has some good ideas and I was lucky to be able to combine the Atlassian Community Events group I run in LA and the inaugural atproto.la event together, leverage a sponsor relationship I had on the Atlassian side of the house, and get assistance from PBC, but that won’t be doable every time. For reference, the space I got, which was for four hours(1hr setup, 2hr event, 1 hr hang), was nearly $1k just for the space. PBC covered food, and ACE LA had leftover drinks from our previous event. So any help in that space would be absolutely appreciated.
  4. The collaboration stuff worked well and we might continue to try that model, but the other thing I know is that if you can keep a dedicated location and schedule, it’s way easier to bring people back time and time again, and grow the events, so the tricky part is balancing those two tensions.
  5. Promotion would be helpful too, and I’m interest3d to think about where else we can bring people in from.
  6. Lastly, it might be interesting to specifically blend these events to also pull in power users/enthusiasts who aren’t devs, since the number one thing the Atmosphere needs is more users to use (and pay for!) everyone’s apps. Would require some different types of events to be held, methinks.

I’ve been running ACE Los Angeles for several years this current stint and helped launch Atlassian’s Community Events program back in the day, so I’m more than happy to help any other group that wants to get one started. I’m super super passionate about regional/local events, it’s one of the most fun things that I get to do with Atlassian and I have made such good friends through it, and it’s already happening here too!

okay, long post over.

Thanks for everything, @bmann.ca @knowtheory.net @ngerakines.me @essentialrandom.bsky.social @lucca.northsky.team and everyone else who made this such an awesome event. I really do mean it when I say I’ve been looking for a new conference home, and there’s no way this isn’t it.:heart::heart:
